Botox for Hyperhidrosis

Botox for Hyperhidrosis

Often associated with cosmetic wrinkle reduction, the revolutionary neurotoxic protein Botox has more uses than just cosmetics! Botox for hyperhidrosis is an increasingly common treatment and use of the toxin.

Hyperhidrosis, more commonly known as excessive sweating, can significantly affect a person’s quality of life. In some cases, problematic sweating does not extend beyond one area of the body, such as the underarms or feet. Other situations are more generalized, with sweating over large areas of the body. The most common areas affected by hyperhidrosis are the scalp, underarms, hands, feet, and groin area. The FDA has approved the use of Botox for people who sweat excessively from their armpits.

What is Botox and how does it work?

The name Botox is a brand name of a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. This toxin, called Botulinum, is very deadly. However, when used appropriately and in a therapeutic context, it is safe and beneficial.

Under normal circumstances, when your body temperature rises, your nervous system activates your sweat glands. This is your body’s natural automatic cooling system. However, in people with hyperhidrosis, the nerves that signal the sweat glands are overactive.

Botox treatment works by blocking the nerves which activate your sweat glands. When you receive Botox injections, your overactive nerves are in effect paralyzed. In other words, your nerves can no longer signal your sweat glands, you don’t sweat. However, Botox only prevents sweating in the specific injection area.

How long does Botox treatment last?

The effects of Botox last for around 6-9 months on average. This treatment has a high satisfaction rate among patients as well! Retreatment is typically needed in 4 to 6 months, as the nerves regenerate. Over time, however, patients can go longer between treatments.
