The neurotoxic protein Botox if often associated with wrinkle reductions. Contrarily, it has more uses than simply cosmetic! In fact, Botox for migraines is an increasingly common treatment and use of the toxin.
If you are someone who experiences migraines frequently, you may be wondering of there’s ever going to be relief. In 2010 the neurotoxin was approved for the use of migraine treatment. You may be eligible if you fit certain criteria, namely:
- You have a history of migraine headaches
- You experience headaches on most days (15 or more) of the month of which 8 are migraines.
What is Botox and how does it work?
Botox is a brand name of a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. This toxin, called Botulinum, is very deadly. However, when used appropriately and in a therapeutic context, it is safe and beneficial.
In particular, the treatment works by targeting the nervous system. First it blocks signals from the nerves that cause muscle contractions. Then the injected muscle in turn can’t contract. Specifically, when injected around pain fibers involved in headaches, it blocks the release of chemicals involved in pain transmission. This prevents activation of pain networks in the brain.
In fact, studies show relief can be found through Botox injections! One study showed that these injections reduced the total number of days they had headaches. In addition, they also reported fewer days off work.
Likewise, another study showed that 50% of people who received two rounds of Botox injections reported a reduction in headaches. That number increased to nearly 70% after five rounds of treatment.
