History of BOTOX Treatments
When it comes to cosmetic treatment, especially aesthetic interventions, BOTOX is probably the most common and arguably most well-known treatment performed today. It is estimated that over 7 million people a year receive BOTOX injections.
But did you know that the use of medically injected BOTOX was first suggested way back in the early 1800s? It was used to treat overactive nervous system conditions. It wasn’t until over 180 years later it started to be used medically. Yet another decade until it’s used for cosmetic purposes. Patients who received cosmetic BOTOX injections around their faces started reporting relief from chronic headaches. That is what spawned multiple uses for Botox in the treatment of other conditions.
What Exactly Is BOTOX?
BOTOX is a brand name for a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. This toxin, called Botulinum, is very deadly. However, when used appropriately and in a therapeutic context, it is safe and beneficial.
BOTOX works by targeting the nervous system. It blocks signals from the nerves that cause muscle contractions. The injected muscle in turn can’t contract.
